Donald R. Prothero is the author of over 30 books, including the best-selling Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why it Matters (Columbia University Press, 2007), which won the Outstanding Earth Science Book of 2007 award from the American Association of Publishers. His book The Eocene-Oligocene Transition: Paradise Lost was designated the outstanding earth science book of 1994 by Choice. Other popular titles include Abominable Science: The Origin of Yeti, Nessie, and Other Cryptids (Columbia Univ. Press, 2012, with D. Loxton), Catastrophes! Earthquakes, Tsunamis, Tornadoes, and other Earth-Shattering Disasters (Johns Hopkins University Press, Baltimore, 2011), Greenhouse of the Dinosaurs: Evolution, Extinction, and the Future of our Planet (Columbia Univ. Press, 2009), After the Dinosaurs: The Age of Mammals (Indiana University Press, 2006), and Horns, Tusks and Flippers: The Evolution of Hoofed Mammals and their Relatives (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2002). He is the author of five leading college textbooks in physical geology (Earth: Portrait of a Planet, with S. Marshak, W.W. Norton, 2001), historical geology (Evolution of the Earth, 8th edition, 2009, WCB/McGraw-Hill, with R.H. Dott, Jr.), paleontology (Bringing Fossils to Life: An Introduction to Paleobiology, 3rd ed., Columbia University Press, 2012), sedimentary geology (Sedimentary Geology: An Introduction to Sedimentary Rocks and Stratigraphy, 3rd ed., W.H. Freeman, with F. Schwab, 2012), and stratigraphy (Interpreting the Stratigraphic Record, W.H. Freeman, 1990). He is the author, editor, or co-editor of numerous technical volumes, including The Evolution of Perissodactyls (with R.M. Schoch, Oxford University Press, 1989), The Evolution of Artiodactyls (with S. Foss, Johns Hopkins University Press, 2007), and several books dealing with the Eocene-Oligocene transition and other topics.
